Remarkable
DAVID SALYERS, Author & Retired Chick-fil-A Marketing Executive
Monday Morning General Session

How many businesses do you come across in a day that are just plain unremarkable? They have nothing unique that sets them apart from their competitors, and they exist only to extract value from their customers. To put it simply, there’s nothing about these types of organizations that’s worth remarking about.

But what if we could shift the paradigm? What if we could truly understand what makes certain businesses “remarkable” and apply those principles to our own organizations? In this signature talk, David Salyers powerfully does just that. In “Remarkable,” David will walk through how the shift from extracting value from other people to creating value for other people can radically change your business and the impact it will make to your customers, employees, stakeholders, and even your bottom line. Exploring key themes on culture, values, and mission, “Remarkable” is an engaging and memorable speech that has the potential to impact you and your organization to the very core.

2021 Market Outlook: What to Expect in the Post-Pandemic Adjustment Period
SCOTT KNAPP, Managing Principal for CUNA Mutual Fiduciary Consultants
Monday Morning General Session, Sponsored by CUNA Mutual Group

COVID-19 brought out the best and worst of the global economy. The pandemic caused the lowest unemployment rate in fifty years to quickly spike to the highest rate in ninety years. The implosion led to a burst of crisis-response money printing and stimulus payments to affected businesses and individuals. But human ingenuity is once again set to prevail with warp-speed development of an effective vaccine. A post-pandemic adjustment period will soon follow, impacting investors’ portfolios across the risk spectrum for years to come. During this session, the pandemic’s impact on the structure of the economy and its influence on financial markets will be discussed in simple, entertaining terms. Special emphasis will be placed on the outlook for savers and investors.

Falling in Love with Your Vision
TIMOTHY ALEXANDER, Emmy Award-Winning Speaker
Monday Afternoon General Session, Sponsored by Corporate One FCU

Timothy Alexander will share how his vision for his own future guided him to triumph over adversity – a rough childhood, a horrible accident, years of excruciating rehabilitation – to earn three degrees, become an accomplished nationwide speaker and an important part of the renewed University of Alabama at Birmingham football program.

As business leaders, we all need to have a vision too. A vision for how we can become the best we can be for those in our personal lives as well as those we serve in our professional lives. And as Timothy will explain, when you find and fall in love with your vision, others around you will too.

DAVID SALYERS

David Salyers was one of the original two marketing executives at Chick-fil-A. He spent 37 years in the Chick-fil-A Marketing Department and most recently served as a Vice President before his recent retirement. Having worked at Chick-fil-A his entire career, he saw the principles of servant leadership and compassion play out in the growth of more than 2,300 Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country. Chick-fil-A, one of America’s most successful, powerful and beloved brands, is a multi-billion dollar company built almost entirely on culture. Chick-fil-A has experienced over 50 consecutive years of sales growth and is at, or near, the top rankings of U.S. brands across all sectors. David has invested his entire career working in and helping to build a culture only to be described as remarkable.

Having graduated from college on a Saturday morning, David started his career with Chick-fil-A before the day was over. David started in Chick-fil-A’s training program on his graduation day in 1981, whose headquarters was located in a converted air freight warehouse at that time. “Talk about getting in on the ground floor,” says David. “I’ve held so many jobs at Chick-fil-A that I can’t count them all . . . and no job that I’ve held had ever been done before I did it. When I started at Chick-fil-A, we had a two-person marketing department. Today, we have more than 200 people in our marketing department, we have a 97 percent retention with people we hire throughout the company — and we’ll do $10 billion in sales this year.”

Over the course of 20+ years, David was instrumental in the growth and development of the iconic ‘cow campaign’ at Chick-fil-A and helped champion a marketing department that rose to international prominence and prestige. David is known for his marketing mind, his servant’s heart, and his entrepreneurial spirit.

His 2016 book, Remarkable, in which he co-wrote with Dr. Randy Ross, imparts leadership lessons that can transform one’s workplace culture. David is the co-founder of Champion Tribes, which exists to help fathers and sons connect in meaningful ways.

David attended Wake Forest University, the Universidad de Madrid (Madrid, Spain), and graduated from the University of Georgia. He is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School (AMP166).

David serves as a board member for numerous organizations and has helped launch several startups and nonprofits.

Salyers has been an enthusiastic supporter of the University of Georgia’s Terry College’s Institute for Leadership Advancement. He spearheaded a $1.2M campaign to raise endowment funds for ILA in honor of one of his principal mentors, Chick-fil-A founder S.Truett Cathy. David is also a member of the Terry Dean’s Advisory Council. In 2017, David was awarded the University of Georgia Terry College of Business Distinguished Alumni Award.

David is currently a member of Northpoint Community Church, where he has served on the stewardship team and as an elder. David and his wife, Lynn, have been married for 29 years and have three children.

TIMOTHY ALEXANDER
Timothy Alexander is a faith driven young man who has dedicated his life to motivating and inspiring others. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Timothy attended Erwin High School and was ranked the #8 high school football player in the state. Timothy had the opportunity to play for any college in the country; however, he was involved in a life-changing car accident in 2006, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. From that point on, Timothy was left to find his purpose in life while paralyzed.

Timothy graduated from Erwin in 2007 and attended Wallace State Community College afterward. After graduating from Wallace State, he enrolled at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he double-majored in Criminal Justice and Communication Management. While at UAB, Timothy left a major impact by becoming the first paraplegic to receive a football scholarship. He was also runner-up for Mr. UAB, a member of Omega Psi Phi, and the former president of UAB Gang Green, who set two school attendance records during UAB’s Basketball season. Timothy received the Student of Excellence Award because of his academic/athletic performance. He was also known for holding prayer gatherings and taking students to church twice a semester.

Timothy was the leader of the 2014 #FreeUAB movement after the UAB Football, Bowling and Rifle programs were terminated on December 2, 2014. After receiving approximately 56 city and county proclamations supporting the reinstatement of the three teams, he joined with UAB Boosters and Birmingham city leaders/supporters to help raise over $40 million in one year.

Timothy completed his undergraduate career by receiving the Colonel Leo Thorsness “Courage Award” from the Youth Leadership Development Program (YLDP) and was also awarded the “Challenge Coin” from Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins.

Timothy recently graduated from UAB with a Masters degree in Communication Management. His proudest moment came on July 18, 2016, when he was able to stand up on his own for the first time since being paralyzed. The video of him standing went viral, catching the eye of ABC National News, TMZ Sports, and other news stations worldwide. Furthermore, Timothy was nominated on November 17, 2016, as the SPORTS PROGRAM FEATURE: FOR THE 31st MIDSOUTH REGIONAL EMMY®AWARDS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES and on January 21, 2017, he was named the EMMY®AWARDS WINNER.
