MS CU’s host financial reality fair at Congressman Thompson’s event
Each October, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson hosts a College and Career Fair in Greenville. The event offers students a chance to learn more about jobs and higher education opportunities. Mississippi credit unions are proud to be a part of the event, hosting a Financial Reality Fair to give students an interactive opportunity to learn about budgeting and managing money in the real world.
Students are given a worksheet at the beginning of the fair, on which they are assigned various educational levels (High School, College, etc.), a family situation, and a job with a reality-accurate monthly salary. They then have to make budgeting & spending decisions based on the situation they were assigned.
“Financial reality fairs are incredible ways to teach young people how to manage their money. It was exciting to watch as the students worked through the simulation of real-life spending and budgeting. Most of them caught on quickly and made choices that netted them a positive ending balance at the end,” said MSCUA Vice President Cheryl Oggs.
Along with staff members from the Mississippi Credit Union Association, participating credit unions included Eagle Express FCU, Hope FCU, Jackson Area FCU, and Statewide FCU.
